What costs does the moving allowance cover? Find out how you can deduct most of your moving expenses!

If you move for professional reasons, you can deduct the moving costs as business expenses or have them reimbursed tax-free by your employer. This includes transport costs, travel costs, double rent payments, estate agent fees for a rental apartment and costs for other moving expenses .

While the first-mentioned costs are deductible up to a proven amount, other moving expenses can be claimed with a flat rate - the so-called flat rate for other moving expenses , also known as the flat rate for moving costs.

The Federal Ministry of Finance has currently increased the flat-rate moving expenses for professional moves as of April 1, 2023 ( BMF letter dated July 21, 2021, IV C 5 - S 2353/20/10004 ).

The moving allowance includes:

  • Tips for the movers and other helpers. This also includes, for example, if you invite your friends to dinner after moving the furniture as a thank you for their help.

  • Professional installation and dismantling of lamps, fitted kitchens and other electrical devices.

  • Professional installation and modification of curtains, drapes, blinds and their holders.

  • Fees for re-registration.

  • Advertisements for apartment searches etc.

  • Costs for cosmetic repairs in the old apartment, provided you are contractually obliged to take over the repairs (but not cosmetic repairs in the new apartment, as these are privately initiated).

We can help with most of the house preparations in order to give it back to the landlord in a great condition and the best news is that if you're moving for professional reason, you can deduct everything, or at least most of the expenses (depending on how big your house is) at your Steuereklärung.

We really hope this info will be helpfull for you as well!

Best regards,
